Ross Brownson

Professor Brownson, a leading expert in chronic disease prevention and an expert in the area of applied epidemiology, is regarded as one of the great intellectual, educational, and practice leaders in the field of evidence-based public health.

Joining the Brown School, in the Summer of 2008, Professor Brownson has helped to advance the School’s efforts in the area of public health, including the development of the School’s Master of Public Health degree. Currently serving as a member of the Faculty Advisory Council of Washington University’s Institute for Public Health, Dr. Brownson has a joint appointment with the University’s School of Medicine (Siteman Cancer Center).

Dr. Brownson co-directs the Prevention Research Center in St. Louis that develops innovative approaches to chronic disease prevention. He leads a large number of other major research and training projects funded by a broad array of federal and foundation sources, including the National Institutes of Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

He is an associate editor of the Annual Review of Public Health, and on the editorial board of five other journals. Dr. Brownson is a board member of the American College of Epidemiology, and is active in the American Public Health Association and the Missouri Public Health Association, he is the editor or author of the books: Chronic Disease Epidemiology and Control, Applied Epidemiology, Evidence-Based Public Health, and Community-Based Prevention.
