What first made you interested in studying public health and/or social work?

In college, I worked at a residential drug treatment program. At the time, I wanted to be some kind of health care provider but treatment at drug rehab was only one part of the recovery of our clients. Many returned back to homes where others used drugs, most were low income and struggling to get by, many were from communities in rural Iowa that had little opportunity. This lead to many of our clients returning to us because of relapse more than once. One of my coworkers was getting her MPH and from hearing her talk about public health it seemed like a great opportunity to address the multi-disciplinary issues I was seeing that led to and made it hard to recover from drug addictions.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I have visited over 20 countries.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

Make the most of on campus work and research opportunities. My work at the PRC has really enhanced my education. I have gotten to immediately apply what I learned in many of my classes like biostatistics and applied linear modeling.
